Why it's good to give in business

With Christmas fast-approaching, one starts to consider the 'season of good will' and what we can do to 'give back' to the community. You might be organising some charity Christmas cards or taking part in something charitable in your local town or city.

At Boomerang, we try and 'do our bit' by supporting the creative industries throughout the year. And we do that via Creative Boom, an online magazine that was started by myself back in July 2009 as a side project to help others struggling to survive the recession.

Why is it good to give back in business? Because it not only feels good, it helps your company to show its soft side, making you warm, friendly and approachable. This is a 'must' in today's online world. People expect brands to be transparent and if you're not giving back to your local community or adding something charitable to your business, then you'll come across as selfish, greedy and uncaring.

Do something good and you'll reap the rewards. You and your staff will enjoy the warm feeling one gets from doing something selfless. But don't just 'do good' to get all the business benefits because people will see through that approach. You have to sincerely offer your help in some shape or form, not just because you want something selfishly out of it.

With Creative Boom, for example, the site is a clever digital marketing tool for Boomerang and all of its clients - but its main focus is to support other firms throughout the UK. I put a lot of spare time into running the website and making sure it provides free support to hundreds of businesses in the creative industries. By doing so, we get a lot of positive feedback and have even been recognised by the RSA for our charitable efforts.

Doing good things in business isn't just great at Christmas, it's encouraged 365 days of the year. If you're giving back to society in business, then your company will enjoy all the benefits you can expect from being supportive of others. It's expected in today's online world.
