What does a digital PR and marketing agency do?

A question we often get asked is what does a digital PR and marketing agency do exactly? To explain in simple terms, it protects and enhances online reputations for brands and businesses. This means it works hard to build a presence on the web and makes sure that it's protected. It can do this through various means - social media being one example but also websites, blogging, online media coverage and helping firms to tell their own story through networks like Instagram or Pinterest.

And why are more and more of these types of agencies popping up? Because newspaper circulations are down due to our insatiable appetite for the web and social media. We don't want to see things in print anymore. We want to get interactive and have fast, convenient access to a wealth of information at our fingertips. We don't want to wait until the morning papers to see what's going on in the world. We want it right now! What's more, we want to discuss the world and what's happening with thousands of other people through social networks. We want to be more involved. We want engagement.

The same can be said if you look at television and radio. Just like newspapers, they simply broadcast out their messages and content. Whereas people want to be able to interact these days. That's why many TV programs encourage people to tweet and share their views by using a specific hashtag. BBC Question Time is one great example of this. And why many celebrities talk directly to their fans through Twitter and Facebook.

In fact, recent surveys would have us believe that we're all sat at home, watching telly with our iPads and iPhones on our laps, doing all sorts of things all at once. We don't want passive communication anymore. We want to connect and have our voices heard.

This is where digital PR and marketing agencies become so important. They help brands and businesses to communicate with customers. They help them step away from the traditional, one-way marketing and into a new world of opportunities. It might seem scary and unknown to some but it's actually opened up many doors and has made marketing 'fun' again.

Boomerang started life as a 'traditional' agency, i.e. we're a team of people who all share backgrounds in journalism and public relations. But back in 2007, we ditched the traditional side of PR and marketing to focus online. It's not that we're not capable of providing traditional support - it's what we've been doing successfully for many of our clients, and still do for some. It's just that because everyone is now online and the media industry is transforming before our eyes, it makes sense to channel our skills and resources to providing the best effective range of services that actually see results.

Ask us what a digital PR and marketing agency does? So much more than before. If you want to get ahead and start talking to customers, building online communities, boosting your reputation across the Internet and ensure your website is as successful as possible - then stop approaching 'PR agencies' and instead find a team of experts who'll be able to lead you confidently into the new digital era.
