The Archers goes Interactive

One of Britain's best-loved radio soap operas has entered the digital revolution by launching a new interactive website.

The Archers, which is broadcast on BBC Radio 4, was originally billed as 'an everyday story of country folk' when it started back in 1950. Today, it's described as a 'contemporary drama in a rural setting'.

This morning's news about its new website only reaffirms this 'contemporary' theme and the BBC's recognition of the need to 'keep up with the times' and turn a very traditional show into something that also appeals to younger generations.

The site - www.bbc.co.uk/archers - has a 'listen again' feature, so you can catch up with all the latest episodes. And you can also download podcasts - great if you'd prefer to listen to the soap opera on your phone or iPod whilst on the move.

There's an Archers blog, a Twitter feed and a separate 'Ambridge Village Website', where you can see what's happening in the fictional village. There's also quick quizzes, message boards, where you can discuss your favourite episodes, and even an Ambridge interactive map.

The site is a great example of how businesses and brands are making the most of the Internet and social media to enhance their products and services. As everyone is online these days, it's so important to have a web presence that people can easily access and enjoy.

People want to get involved in discussion. They want to give feedback and talk to others sharing similar interests. The Archers website recognises these needs and gives the people what they want.

Social media is a perfect way to engage with your audience. It also helps you to become more approachable and appealing to potential customers because a business that isn't using Twitter or writing a blog could be seen as 'behind the times' and unfriendly.

The Archers has been around for over 60 years. By making the most of social media, it'll certainly keep its place amongst old and new fans for many decades to come.
