Social networks are dominating the web
Britain is addicted to social media. That’s what the recent data from Experian Hitwise suggests, as it has found that UK internet users prefer social networking to entertainment websites.
The online analytics agency found that Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have become more popular than the likes of BBC iPlayer. But what does this mean for the entertainment industry? Are people losing interest?
Social networks are gradually dominating the web. They host content from entertainment and news websites based on recommendations from friends. This in no way means that entertainment websites are losing the online struggle, and people are certainly not losing interest. It’s just another example of how social networks have incorporated different online platforms to create a ‘web within the web’.
So what does all this mean for the future of the internet? Could social networking become bigger than Google? Google still remains the most visited website with Facebook coming in second. The two have been pit against each other since Facebook made it big, with rumours surfacing of Google creating its own social network.
What is perhaps making Facebook an even bigger threat is its connections to other networks. We are able to share our Twitter status and YouTube videos with our friends through our Facebook profile. And users are simply flicking from one network to the next, which means that social networking is getting stronger.
Despite of this it appears that Google still holds the crown for internet dominance, but with Facebook’s rapid progression, should they be worried? Right now it’s anyone’s guess but it will be interesting to see what the stats reveal in 2012.
