Looking for office space? How people use search engines

When looking for new office space for a friend today, it became hugely obvious just how lucrative the office space market is on the Internet.

There's so much rubbish in the search engine results pages that it's a nuisance sifting through everything. It seems that there are so many websites competing for our attention for office space, we almost feel like giving up.

But essentially, we don't give up. How people use search engines and how the search engine algorithms work ensures we eventually find exactly what we're looking for.

You see people are likely to start off with broad search terms. They'll type in something like 'office space'. That brings up 127,000,000 results with the top result being 'Office Space: the film' - one of my favourite comedies actually. A low budget film by Mike Judge.

But that's not what most people will be looking for. So they'll then narrow their search by typing in something like 'Office space in London'. At the moment, Google Places might well kick in. Again, this might bring up a load of spam websites and too many results - in this case, over 12 million.

So you'd narrow it down even further, either by adding a more specific location like 'Shoreditch', in which case you might find THECUBE or The Hoxton Mix as examples of local office space.

But you might also ask questions like 'Where can I find office space in London?' and find something like The Office Farringdon.

With your search complete, you can now see how people use search engines and the Internet to find what they're looking for. They start with a broad search and then narrow it down until they find what they're looking for.

When you put all this into perspective, you can see why SEO becomes so important. SEO helps your website to be easily found by potential customers. If you've got a website, SEO isn't an option - it's compulsory. Otherwise, what's the point of having a website? When you understand how people use search engines, you can start to apply the necessary on-page and off-page SEO to really boost your website.
