It's better to be humble in business

As you know, I've been working at Boomerang for quite some time now and I've learnt so much about social media and online reputations, that I felt compelled to write today's blog post.. About why it's better to be humble in business.

Because people are strange characters, they really are. In Britain, we seem to have this odd attitude that if someone's doing well, then we don't like them. Instead of celebrating successful people, we put them down. We almost build them up to knock them down again. It's bizarre.

Brits always prefer the underdog. Just take a look at what's happened with all the reality/talent shows on television. Everyone's hoping Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ann Widdecomb wins the final while 'dumb blonde' Stacey Solomon has just won I'm a Celebrity. There's even hope that X Factor finalist Wagnar will steal this year's crown.

It seems we all love our losers, perhaps because they're less of a threat on our own insecurities? Who knows. But it's important to take all this into account when marketing your own business on the web.

Being humble online instead of bragging and 'bigging yourself up', is the right way to go. You don't want to shout too much about yourself on social media anyway. Instead, you want to be a warm and friendly business that offers tips and advice or support to others wherever possible.

You want to 'under-sell' yourself and approach marketing with a far less aggressive manner than you're probably used to. The world has changed you see. And it's important to understand why digital marketing is hugely different to traditional.

Being humble on social media and being helpful is the best advice I can give. If you apply the same old marketing techniques to things like Twitter and Facebook, then you'll just be alienating potential customers.

An example? A local firm has a Facebook account and all they do is add updates like 'We've just won this award!' And 'We've just got this success for our client!' And 'Call us now!' Whilst we do a little of this ourselves, we also go the extra mile to share videos or articles we like that might be of interest to our fans. And we also share tips and tricks to help others.

This humble approach is far better than the 'me, me, me!' type attitude. Because nobody likes a show-off. So when thinking about how to present your company to the world, it's always better to be humble in business.
