Gaining a strong Google PageRank

Katy Cowan posted this on 23 January 2011.

This morning, we woke up to the fantastic news that Boomerang has finally, after months of waiting, secured a Google PageRank of five out of 10. Why are we so excited? Because a ranking of 'five' in the eyes of Google is pretty damn good, that's why.

But why's it good? And why does it even matter? Well it's not completely and utterly essential, but PageRank is a small part of a much bigger process that determines where your website will fall in the search engine results pages.

PageRank is described by Google as follows:

"PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. We have always taken a pragmatic approach to help improve search quality and create useful products, and our technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page's importance."

So PageRank is all about how important a web page is in the eyes of Google and that's determined through its link analysis algorithm, a voting system of links. Which basically means, the more high value links pointing to a certain web page, the better. Although PageRank is also determined by other factors such as the size of a page, the words used as hyperlinked anchor texts and the number of changes made.

But what are high value links? And how do you get them? Well, there are lots of different ways. For Boomerang and our clients, we concentrate on building quality content that will draw in lots of web visitors as well as 'link baiting', encouraging people to naturally link to our own web pages.

A recent example of this was a link we secured from a very high ranking domain, one from Harvard University! One of our 'top tips' features on social media marketing was mentioned in the famous Doc Searls Weblog - a page that has a PageRank of five out of 10. What's more, any link you secure from a website that has '.gov' or '.edu' is extremely good for SEO.

Bottom line... Gaining a strong Google PageRank is positive but it's not something you should obsess about. It only plays a small part in how Google determines where your website should rank for certain keywords. Just concentrate on building quality content, attracting links through various link-bait techniques and getting out there to network and drive traffic to your website. Before you know it, you'll be gaining your own strong Google PageRank.
