Facebook to launch Gmail rival
Facebook is set to launch its Gmail rival early next week, according to reports from TechCrunch. The alleged secret 'Project Titan' is expected to be revealed on Monday at a special event by the social network.
It's yet another sign of Facebook's huge global dominance of the web. If it were a country, it would be the world's third largest. More than 500 million people use Facebook with over 50 percent of active users logging into the social media site every single day. More than 30 billion pieces of content is shared each and every month, including everything from web links, photos and news stories to notes, blog posts and videos. Believe me, Facebook is huge.
And its plans to continue that dominance is only clear in its recent actions. That's whether it's launching better photo sharing, rivaling sites like Flickr, or whether it's introducing Google Places to outsmart sites like Foursquare.
The current messaging tool on Facebook certainly lacks any special features and until now, has been considered a low grade service on the social networking platform. Managing emails has always been a pain on Facebook, so it'll be very interesting to see what they unveil on Monday.
Of course, Google recently blocked Facebook from accessing its own API, which prevents users from importing contact details from Gmail to Facebook. Could this be a sign that Google knows what's coming? Perhaps. More will be revealed on Monday.
