Being on the first page of Google for 'PR Agency'
Since we achieved first page positioning for the term 'PR Agency' in Google, it's been really interesting keeping an eye on what's happening on a daily basis. Because as you know, SEO is an ongoing effort and once you get to that first page of results, you have to work really hard to stay there.
Nothing is solid in the search engines. Everything is organic and always changing. You can understand why many businesses might want to go for the easier option of sponsored ads in Google. Even though research suggests that people tend to ignore these adverts and trust the organic results instead.
It took us about 18 months of solid work to get onto the first page of Google for 'PR Agency' and up until yesterday, we were position three out of 1.3 million results worldwide. Today, we're back to position four. And the agency that has been number one for as long as I can remember, has been replaced by a competitor.
Of course, we're not too bothered about being any higher for the term 'PR Agency' because we're targeting a whole range of keywords - both locally and nationally - to cast our net and draw in a much wider audience. There are things we could do to become number one, but it's just not necessary. We don't want to jeapordise those other keywords we're targeting.
And as you've discovered in yesterday's blog post about How People Use the Search Engines, you can see that it doesn't really matter having that first page positioning for such broad search terms because people will always narrow down their search to either find a specialist or someone on their own doorstep.
Our Google Analytics do show a lot of people finding us by typing in 'PR Agency' and 'PR Agencies' but many more find us via search terms like 'PR Agency Cheshire' or 'Digital PR Agency'... or even find us by asking the search engines all sorts of questions. And that's more important to us.
While being on the first page of Google for 'PR Agency' is a result of our successful SEO and digital marketing campaigns and an indication of what we can do for you, it's not essential. SEO isn't as straightforward. You don't want your website to rely on just one competitive keyword do you? Of course not. And that's why content becomes so key to your SEO focus.
